Locomotive Fires: Recommended Guidelines for Fire Suppression Operations for Fires Involving P-32 and P-42 Locomotives

In the past 3 months Amtrak has experienced four fires involving the engine compartments on P-42 locomotives throughout the country.  One of these incidents occurred in Schenectady County.  There were also two incidents involving P-42 locomotives that had fuel leaks, where local fire departments responded to assist Amtrak.

Amtrak operates P-32 and P-42 locomotives throughout the New York State and Metro North Railroad operates P-32 locomotives on their lines within the State of New York.

This presentation was put together to assist fire departments that may have to respond to an incident involving P-32 or P-42 locomotives.
